Analyzing a Film

Pick a movie that you like and analyze the style in the same way that we analyzed our songs in class.

What is the genre of the movie? What aspects of the film make it fit into this genre? How does the film challenge or question the genre?

Who is the audience for this film? How does the film appeal to this audience?

What is the tone of the film? Use details from the film to support your points.

What are the main themes of the film? Analyze the little details of the film (cinematography, editing, music, etc.) to support your points.

remember the titans

this is a movie involving sports with the problem and solution for racism. the genre for this film would have to be sports because that is the theme. but it challenges the genre by adding a political view with some racism incorporated into the film. the audience is mainly young men belonging to both races. it attracts them by having a story of an underdog team climbing the ladder and becoming on of the best. the tone of the film is very compassionate and convincing. only at the end do we see the young black and white boys uniting as friends and as a team. so it portrays this feeling that it can really happen so it convinces the audience to make a change in their life and accept people. the main theme is sports collaborated with racism. the coach takes them to where abe lincoln gave his gettysburg address; this minor detail explains to the audience the massage that its trying to give over is that racism still exist but we must eliminate it from our lives.

this movie was based on a true story.

The movie "Raging Bull" shows the life of Jake LaMotta, a boxer from the 1940s and 50s. As for the genre, I would say the film would be a drama, which is probable the most broad genre there is. It is a drama because it deald with very universal human issues - relationships with your family, your friends, your loved ones, etc. It's a movie about a boxer, but boxing is the least important element of it. The only important part about the sports aspect of the movie is the way LaMotta fights, he keeps going and going no matter how many times he gets hit, and doesn't stop. It's relevant to how he lives his life. He just does what he does, not considering who he may be hurting or affecting. The music of the movie relates to the times and also at times is very sad and epic, because of how Jake ends up. The editing is typical of a Scorsese film, exaggerating important scenes and showing strange detail.
