Physical Transformation

In recent years, we have seen the growing popularity of television shows about extreme weight loss and extreme body modification (The Biggest Loser, Extreme Makeover). Why do you think people are drawn to these stories of physical transformation?

the influence of society and culture effects people in many ways. society has the mindset of fat people being ugly people. therefore the fat people try to transform themselves in order to fit the "ideal" body and shape; they want to satisfy not only themselves, but also the society. in the biggest loser, the characters emphasize their struggle of being fat and how they were treated by others due to their obesity. in my opinion, they did not have to come to the show, they couldve gone to the gym themselves. however in the end, I do end up sympathizing for them. Not only do they look better, but are in a much healthier state. The show's message is one that i can respect which is to stay healthy. In Extreme makeover, i'm sure not all these people are fat. the majority of the characters are pretty healthy just not satisfied with their looks. so, they perform cosmetic surgery and seem to be satified with fake beauty. this show gives us the notion that everyone has to be pretty, and if your not, well then, you look sort of like crap. At the end, both shows talk about how this has changed people's lives, society then believes they have to change themselves as well in order to live "happily".

People are drawn to these stories such as “Extreme Makeover” or Biggest Loser” because they are amazed at how far people can go to reach their ideal state. Society plays a major role of how people view themselves and how they view others. No one wants to be labeled as an outcast when they do not fit the norm. Americans are always looking for a quick fix from technology to medicine, so if they see that you can drastically change your appearance in a matter of a couple of trials, it entices them to want to make drastic changes themselves. In the end all the work a person goes through to seek society’s standards of beauty end up being meaningless. If you notice after they made the drastic change, it still is never enough. They always have something else they need to change or do. Their self-esteem may seem as if they have confidence but they act even more insecure about their new look or weight-loss because they begin to feel the pressure of keeping up or continuing that same lifestyle.

i think people are drawn to these kinds of stories because it reflects themslelf or makes their life look better. thats why i think people watch any kind of dramatic tv show. people want to forget about the problem that they have by watching a fiction tv show where their life is so much worse. sometimes but really only sometimes people would watch shows that help them. for example if someone watches a show about an eating disorder and they themself has a disorder or their friend does it helps them to overcome this disorder or to at least tell someone about it. tv shows try to make it appeal to their audience by making their shows realte to people in evryday life.

i really think that people are drawn to these things because it gives them a sense of hope. that their is still a chance for people like them to make their lives better, because if you watch the show biggest looser you could see that most of the contestant are their to make their lives healthier.you hear stories like i am here so can play with my child and i can't do that because I'm over weight or something like that. it is the same thing with extreme makeover and the only difference is they do things surgically. like they perform surgeries to help you save your self

in today's society there is a lot of people who are overweight or obese. im not sure what the number is but im pretty sure its more 50 or 60 percent. It is becoming an everyday thing seeing people overweight or obese so when you see someone 400 or 500 pounds drop to 150 or 200, people are like holy sh*t thats a big transformation. To them its so big because it seems so unrealistic to certain people that seeing a change like that is similiar in doing the impossible. Also i believe that tv stations are seeing this and realizing that they can make a lot of money by making these shows and they are right.

I think that people are so drawn to shows like the Biggest Loser and Extreme Makeover mainly because it is easier to watch other people accomplish such a large goal then to actually get up and do it themselves. It also can be used as a way in which viewers can justify the physical condition that they are in. If a 160 pound woman, that is overweight, compares herself to a 300 pound woman, that is obese, on for ex. the Biggest Loser, she immediately feels that her weight is not a big deal in compasrion to the woman on tv. The woman watching the show also may feel that because she is not as overweight as the woman on tv that she does not need the same or similar kind of fitness help.
Also I think that people are drawn to seeing another individual struggle with a challenge, whatever it may be. This is why I think that people are drawn to stories of physical transformation.

as the years progress the american society has been and will keep drastically change. many people today are drawn to physical transformation because of many reason. the underlying and main reason why people undergo transformations is becaus et they are unhappy with themselves. they are unhappy about their face, butt, thigh, nose stomach and all other body parts which people change which they thinkis for better. most people who are drawn to these interesting and bizarre stories is because they wish they had the same opportunity as the person they are watching. although the didnt transform themselves but the fact that they are just watching the show shows an interest to this topic and might someday be influenced by this idea of physical transformation.

Pretty much everybody these days wants to change some part of their body. Since the start of cosmetic surgery, people feel like their body could potentially be improved to be flawless so they always think about what they would want to change in order to look perfect. I think that it's because of this that people are always focusing on the negative and what they don't like that caused this huge issue of low self esteem and eating disorders that's plagueing teenagers these days, but that's a totally different topic. The point is that everyone thinks about what they don't like about their body so when they watch other people changing their bodies and transforming themselves, it's like a child watching a fairy tale. Pretty much, people like watching something that they wish would happen to them because they get to experience it vicariously through the person on tv and that's why these shows became so popular.

I think that people are drawn to these stories of physical transformation because they represent the new American dream. In America, you can get the house, car, job, and now body of your dreams. Most of which you can get with very little effort. People don't realize the flaws in these plans of instant gratification. People are under the impression because of the way the shows are designed that everyone lives happily ever after. They look happier and healthier so it inspires people to be just like that. What they don't see is the gaining back of the weight, or the mental issues that sometimes surface after drastic physical modifications. Who doesn't want to be skinny and beautiful? But instead of society having a mindset that is open about beauty, shows try to constrict it to a very routine sort of beauty that everyone should have.

Shows like these are the "instant gratification" type, and they readily attract audiences. Its part of a bigger issue, where the American society as a whole doesn't want to work. There is a whole mix of shows like these. These particular shows attract a portion of the overweight American society, which happens to be a large number nowadays. People will watch these shows and be like "wow! just like that!" and assume that whatever they want to do is about an hour away, which is wrong.

i think shows like biggest loser draw some people who really need help with their weight issues. everyone knows that alot of americans arent the healthiest eaters. some contestants however are drawn by the aspect of playng the game on reality tv. extreme makeover on the other hand is a bit ridiculous and is no longer on the air because they were sued by one of the people on the show. the "contestant" would have taken to long to heal so she wasnt a viable option. i think that extreme took advantage of its contestants while biggest loser tries to help more with health issues not just with some lady who thinks the world is against her cause her nose is crooked. some people go on both shows for the wrong reasons but biggest loser is the lesser of 2 evils by far.

People could be drawn to these shows for different reasons. Sometimes, I feel like people watch them just for the sake of seeing someone else's misfortunes-and feeling good that someone is in worse shape than themselves. Also, these shows often have celebrities on them. I think it definitely makes people feel better to see that celebrities go through the same issues as them. And when they actually do lose weight or come out looking better than before, it gives people watching a sense of hope.

People are drawn to these stories for one of two reasons. 1, they're ugly and they're looking for a way to fix their disabilities. 2, they're looking for a good story. I love to hear about complications during these sex change operations and what-not. Yeah the complications part is great, but I also love how stupid some of the people look after the surgery. Goddamn, plastic surgery is the perfect term. Plastic, my friends,is not natural. So yeah, that whole "plastic surgery" sounds like they're fixing toys or some stupid shit. And you see how fake people look once they've gotten this surgery. They look like some sort of different material. Kind of liek plastic...
