Mrs. Sen's

Compare Mrs. Sen and Eliot. How are they similar? How are they different? Why do you think Lahiri tells the story through Eliot's perspective? How might the story change if we (as readers) had more access to Mrs Sen's interior thoughts?

Mrs. Sen and Eliot are both alone. Mrs. Sen's husband has somewhat forsaken her and her feelings, while Eliot's mother seems detached from her son. They're different in the fact that Eliot has had "a taste" of the ways things have to be from a young age, so it doesn't phase him. Mrs. Sen, however, is used to things being very different. Because of that, the sudden change hurts her deeply. I think Lahiri did it through Eliot's perspective because, being a child, he'll be unbiased. He also doesn't really know Mrs. Sen, so we can judge her by her actions alone and not by anything Eliot things/feels. If we had access to Mrs. Sen's thoughts, the story would be much more tragic and the part about Eliot growing up would not be a part of the story.

Like Rosa said, the similarties between Mrs. Sen and Eliot is that both of them are alone in the story. Eliot's mother is always busy and only gets to see her son at night where Mrs. Sen only sees her husband at night too but it seemed to me that he didn't have much feelings towards the way she felt about things (driving). The only difference between the two is that Eliot is still a kid and hasn't experience any problems in life compared to Mrs. Sen where she seems very unhappy throughout the story and due to this, if the story would of been told through Mrs. Sen's eyes then it would have sounded more depressing and would have not been so focused on Eliot and his mother but on MR and Mrs Sen.

Mrs. Sen and Eliot are both same in the way that they have noone who can understand them and their feelings. Thats why when Eliot comes to Mrs. Sens house he always enjoys her company and tries to see what shes going through. Mrs. Sen is alone in the world where shes not used to. Instead of her husband being there hes not really close to her as he should be. Eliot also is apart from his mom because shes busy in her own world and doesnt see what Eliot wants. The author chose to write through Eliots perspective because he doesnt know much and cant take anybodys side. If the story was written through Mrs. Sen perspective, she would write it mostly about how she feels and what she wants from her life and her husband.

besides for the sense of age differnce between mrs. sen and eliot, they both seem to portray a feeling of being left alone. both mrs sen and eliot spend most of there days with each other instead of there husband/mother. and it isnt just feeling alone, both eliots mother and mr. sen seem to play a role in which theyre always too busy. Mrs. sen and eliot are very observant of the world around them but eliots observance is only present when he is with mrs. sen, for example when shes driving he seems to notice everything finally.

Mrs.Sen and Eliot are both dependent, or atleast thats what i felt when i was reading the story. Mrs.Sen can't do anything without her husband. she needs him to get fish from the market and one day when he says no, she is in a way is left helpless. Eliot on the other hand has to stay with Mrs.Sen because his mother don't want to leave him home alone. so in a way he is kind of dependent on Mrs.Sen.

I think that Mrs. Sen and Elliot were very similiar. One thing that made them very similar is that they really didn't have anyone in there lives. Elliot lives on the beach and has no friends around him. Also Mrs. Sen also has no one, ever since she came to American she hasn't really made friends and is all alone. Also they were similar because they have no one to talk to. Elliot is always alone because his mother is at work all the time and Mrs. Sen is thousands of miles away from her relatives and friends. They both just seem to be very lonely people that need each other to get through there very isolated lives.
