News Article: Vogue's Fashion Photos Spark Debate in India

Recently, Vogue India photographed impoverished Indian workers in expensive designer clothing for a spread in the August issue.

Why do you think that there was such an outcry against these photographs? Do you think that this crosses the line into exploitation? How does using "real people" differ from using models?

there was an outburst of cries because the fashion magazine took pictures very poor people who cant even afford to put bread on their table with exquisite designer clothes. this fashion is only available for the high class people but its an insult to put real people to promote their clothes. it even a bad way to advertise, they have to make the outfit look but and it didnt look good on people who are only makin $1.25 a day they have more things to worry about then designer clothes. it doesnt show that all people can be fashionable because you need alot of money to dress the way the high class people do and these poor people in india cant afford this.

I think that there was an outcry because of the fact that the photographer decided to use the most destitute and impoverished people in India to advertise ridiculously expensive clothing they will never be able to afford, or even be allowed to walk into the store that sells such merchandise. They are not even named in the photographs, just referred to by gender. It's exploitation because while the photographer is making a huge sum, the people in the photograph are not even named, so perhaps they weren't paid. Or they could have been paid something so small it would have given the photographer a huge profit. Either way, it's in bad taste. It's like using deaf people to advertise iPods. It's inappropriate and the photographer should worry less about making a fashion statement and perhaps more about helping the global community.

it speaks alot about the people behind this shoot that actually thought this was a good idea. it is the definition of kicking someone when they are down. if you buy the dress that "female" is wearing does a portion of the profit go to her? it shows how detached people can be. in our ever changing quest to "push the envelope" the space being pushed out is human decency.

vogue used dirty trick by using those people in their photo shoot.i think it is downright exploitational and lacks every form of human decency.dressing a person in a &1000 dress they cant afford in ten years based on their income is demeaning.the money and effort put into the photo shoot should have been used to improve the lives of those people

There was such an outcry against these photographs because the vouge used the poor people to exhibit their fashionable clothes which was not right. By putting those expensive clothes on the poor people, the rich people are trying to make them feel that they are not worthy of wearing these type of clothes. I think that this does crosses the line into exploitation because Vouge used the impoverished workers for their own purpose not to benefit them or other workers. If thye wanted then all that money that they used they could have used half or even one fourth of it for the use of those workers and make their life better.
