Superman & Alexie

What does the image of Superman represent in American culture. Why do you think Sherman Alexie would compare himself to this Western icon?

Superman's name alone represents his significance of being "super" and fighting crime with his extrodinary strength. He is considered to be a heroic figure, stopping the 'bad' from doing wrong. Alexie starts off his narrative with Superman because he was inspired to learn how to read. Even though Superman was not a learning show, Alexie translated pictures to words with his every action. In his later years, Alexie realizes that he too is much like Superman whereas he used education as his tool. Because Alexie's culture was brought down upon society long ago, people still tend to believe that Indians are not capable of learning. By comparing himself to Superman, Alexie wants to save those stopping themselves from learning, rather encourage them about their future and the necessity of education.

i think everyone wishes they could compare themselves to superman. I dont no why alexie thinks hes so special that he can compare himself to superman. Superman posses ridiculous amount of strength an supernatural powers that he uses to rescue humanity from evil. Alexie taught himself how to read. Not that thats not a great accomplishment but really does that make u anything like superman. Alexie helped others learn how to read, thats nice but still doesnt make superman. If anything that other guy douglass is superman cuz he had a much harder time learning how to read and did more( in my opinion) with his education than alexie did.

Superman in our society has come to become a perfect figure with no flaws. He has so many powers and only one weakness he is almost invincible. In our society superman is seen as a man that can do anything he wants he is not bound by norms of society. Superman is seen as a person who is strong, forceful and doesn't ever give in to anything. I think Alexie compared himself to superman becuase i think like many of us he wished he could be superman. He wished he could just use powers and save all the Native American children that are not living up to there potential on the reservation. Also i think he compared himself to superman to express his concern with saving the children of the reservation to falling into what society deems. He wants to be a super hero just like superman and he compares himself to superman showing that only he can save these kids. Alexie also believes he is doing something that promopts justice and the thing superman represents the most in justice.

superman in the eye's of people today is someone who can do the impossible and has many different ablities such as super strenght, super speed, etc. He is known as the a heroic figure who has no ends to his power. I guess alexie said he was like superman due to the fact that he thought himself how to read and self educated himself. in alexie's eyes that was pretty much the impossible and that is what superman is capable of.

i think we all like to associate ourselves with symbols larger than ourselves.it make us feel less significant in the general scheme of things.the author compared himself to super man to show the enormity of the challenges he faced and how he -like superman-succeded against all odds.he also tried to portray himself as the beacon of hope for his community's mental emancipation.

Did you always notice how superman always beats the villain’s almost to death but never kills them? I think this is because superman is supposed to represent the moral values of society. Superman could kill any of the villains that he wanted to and they wouldn’t be anymore problems but he chooses not to. I think Alexie compared himself to superman because he was able to overcome his kryptonite, which was learning to read own his own and becoming successful besides what society told him .
